Study period:
26 July 2010 - 28 July 2010
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Fully documented study run under GLP and according to international guidelines.
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
In step 4, 100 ml H2O was used in-stead of 10 – 20 ml.

yes (incl. certificate)
Key result
Test procedure:
step 1
Max. rate of gas release:
0 L/kg min
Identity of evolved gas:
not applicable as no gas evolved
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed
Test procedure:
step 2
Max. rate of gas release:
0 L/kg min
Identity of evolved gas:
not applicable as no gas evolved
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed

The test item “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” is considered as not flammable in contact with water.

No gas evolution was observed throughout the experiment.

Interpretation of results:
highly flammable
Remarks:
Migrated information
Conclusions:
The test item reaction mass of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA) is classified as not flammable in contact with water.
In accordance to the Technical Guidance on Information Requirements / CSA, section 7.1.10, the flammability of liquids is primarily defined by the flash point of the substance. According to the flash point and boiling point of reaction mass of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA), the test item is highly flammable.
Executive summary:

Throughout the test for flammability in contact with water, the test item reaction mass of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA) showed negative results. The test item did not show any gas evolution at all.

Therefore, the test item reaction mass of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA) is classified as not flammable in contact with water.

Description of key information

In accordance with Annex 1 to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” is classified as highly flammable, H225.

Based on experimental results, the test item “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” is classified as not flammable in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

In accordance to the Technical Guidance on Information Requirements / CSA, section 7.1.10, the flammability of liquids is primarily defined by the flash point of the substance. According to the flash point and boiling point of “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues”, the test item is highly flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with Annex 1 to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” is classified as highly flammable, H225 based on its flash point and boiling point.

Based on experimental results, the test item “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” is classified as not flammable in contact with water.
