In a 28 -day MITI test (OECD 301C) tert-butylamine was not biodegradable. Calamari (1980) studied the ready biodegradability of the test substance. However, the method using respirometers did not closely follow the recommendations as stated in the OECD guideline 301 F, since the guidelines on the ready biodegradability were not implemented prior to 1981 and the guideline 301 F was not released before 1992.

The inoculum used in the study was a mixture of river mud bacteria inocula, treatment plant sludge inocula, or adapted bacteria inocula which were not further defined. According to the presented data biodegradation was not observed in a period of 12 days.

Two BASF-studies focused on BOD and DOC removal, respectively. The BOD test was performed according to national guidelines and demonstrated a very low biodegradation of the test substance after 5 days (< 0.31%). However, the test performed according to OECD guideline 302 B resulted in an easy elimination of the test substance from water after a lag phase of 19 days.

Therefore, the test substance is of not readily biodegradability in terms of OECD criteria, however, it can be easily eliminated from water due to biodegradation after an adaption phase.
