Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The toxicity of diethylaminoacetonitrile (CAS 3010 -02 -4) was studied in a GLP guidline study according to OECD 209 using activated sludge from a laboratory wastewater plant treating municipal and synthetic sewage (BASF AG, 1990; report no. 99/0050/08/1). The 30 -min EC20 was determined to be 0.38 mg/L, the EC50 was 2.5 mg/L (nominal). After an extension of the exposure to 3 h, the effect values had changed only slightly (EC20 = 0.34 mg/L, EC50 = 3.2 mg/L, nominal).

This result is supported by two studies according to the method of Bringmann and Kuehn (German Industrial Standard DIN 38412, part 8, draft) using Pseudomonas putida as test organism. The 17 -h EC10 was 0.32 mg/L and the EC50 1.04 mg/L (nominal; BASF AG, 1989; report no. 9/1890473/w).

Two short-term respiration tests using activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant receiving industrial sewage resulted in EC20 values above a critical value of 100 mg/L (BASF AG, 1979).

It can be concluded that depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible. However, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge in adapted wwtps (industrial) is not anticipated when introduced in low concentrations.
