Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The toxicity of melamine to 3 different microorganisms is low.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
2 000 mg/L

Additional information

Three old and/or insufficiently reported studies on the toxicity of melamine to different microorganisms are available. A weight of evidence approach is applied.

Pagga 1979: Inhibition of respiration of activated sludge: EC20 >1992 mg/L.

Hockenbury 1977: Inhibition of nitrification by Nitrosomonas sp.: EC0, 2h >100 mg/L.

Tillmann 1990: Inhibition of respiration of Pseudomonas putida: EC10 >10000 mg/L.

Each of the studies with different endpoints and microorganisms indicates a low toxicity of melamine. The study of Hockenbury 1977 is the relatively best reported one. An EC10 of 2000 mg/L was estimated from the 3 results.

A relative value is not accepted in the field "EC50/LC50" or in the field "EC10/LC10 or NOEC" above.
