Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Melamine is a stable molecule that is hydrolyzed only by mineral acid or inorganic alkali. Hydrolysis proceeds stepwise, with loss of one, two, or all three amino groups, i.e. producing ammeline, ammelide and cyanuric acid. The product spectrum varies with temperature, pH, and concentration; the end product is cyanuric acid [108-80-5].
The rate constants at 100 °C are: k(s-1) = 3.80 x 10exp-5 [OH-] respectively k(s-1) = 1.25 x 10exp-4[H +].

Additional information

A weight of evidence approach from the consistent statements in the 2 handbooks (Gmelin 1971 and Ullmann 2006) is applied.
