Due to the indoor use of the 2-pyrrolidone-based products, there are no direct emissions of 2-pyrrolidone to surface water and sediment. However, a conceivable route of indirect intake is the release of waste-water treatment plant-effluents containing potential 2-pyrrolidone residues into surface water bodies (water and sediment). Hence, surface water and sediment can be are assessed for the environmental risk and PEC values calculated to cover the effects of potential 2-pyrrolidone residues in effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs). The environmental compartments surface water, sediment and air are considered as relevant for environmental emissions of 2-pyrrolidone caused by industrial use of this compound. The soil is not a compartment for direct emissions due to the intended uses of products containing 2-pyrrolidone. Soils do also not represent a relevant sink for indirect emissions of the compound. Furthermore, adsorption of 2-pyrrolidone to solid phase of soil is negligible.

Using the Bond Method of the computer program HENRYWIN from US-EPA a Henry´s Law Constant of 1.46 E-003 PA*M3*mol-1was calculated from the active substance 2-pyrrolidone at 25 °C.
