The ready biodegradation of styrene oxide was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 301B (Ready Biodegradability: CO2Evolution Test) over a period of 28 days and using activated sludge municipal sewage treatment plant as inoculum. The biodegradation rate was determined by measurement of CO2evolution. Inoculum blank, procedural/functional and toxicity control with the reference substance sodium acetate using 40 mg/L were performed. In test bottle B 60 % biodegradation of styrene oxide was reached on day 11. Thus, thecriterion for ready biodegradability was met (60% biodegradation within a 10-day window). In the toxicity control, styrene oxide was foundnottoinhibit microbial activity. This study is regarded as reliable without restriction and satisfies the guideline requirements for ready biodegradation. The test substance proved to be readily biodegradable (81 and 90 % after 28 d) in a study conducted according OECD Guideline 301 B (Ready Biodegradability: CO2Evolution Test).
