Description of key information

No data are available for the toxicity of benzyl acetate to sediment.

Benzyl acetate is rapidly biodegradable (having shown 100.9% biodegradation over 28 days (Birch and Fletcher, 1991) and has only a moderate tendency to partition to organic matter in sediment (having a Koc value of 250), thereby suggesting that exposure to sediment organisms will be minimal. Moreover, predicted environmental concentrations of benzyl acetate in sediment compartments (both freshwater and marine) have shown to be low within the CSA (the highest local PEC values being 0.002 mg/kg wwt in freshwater sediment and 0.000207 mg/kg wwt in marine sediment), and will not occur at levels sufficiently high enough to trigger unacceptable risk to sediment organisms when based on the PNEC values derived via the equilibrium partitioning method stated in IUCLID section 6 (PNECsediment (freshwater): 0.114 mg/kg wwt; PNECsediment (marine water): 0.0114 mg/kg wwt), which are considered as conservative values. As such, studies further investigating the long-term toxicity to sediment organisms are considered unnecessary.
