The sensitizing potential of beta-ionone was investigated in a human maximization test, where it was used at 2.5% in combination with the structural analogue alpha-ionone at 79.5% (CAS 127-41-3; Greif, 1967). When applied at 8% solution to 25 subjects none of them showed sensitizing reactions so that beta-ionone was classified as a non-sensitiser under the conditions of the study. This result was supported by numerous studies, where structural analogues of beta-ionone were tested negative in different animal studies like open epicutaneous tests or guinea pig maximization tests (Sharp, 1978; Takasago, 1999; Klecak, 1977, 1979, 1985; Ishihara, 1986). Because of the structural similarities it can be assumed, that the same results for beta-ionone can be expected.
