Description of key information

In an OECD 201 test the 72-hour EC50 was determined to be 0.475 mg/L and the NOEC 0.247 mg/L based on growth rate.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.475 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.247 mg/L

Additional information

A 72 -hour OECD 201 study was conducted to determine the toxicity of benzyl benzoate to algae. The algae were exposed in triplicate at nominal concentrations of 0.033, 0.065, 0.13, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L. Test vessels were placed on a shaker table adjusted to approximately 100 rpm under continuous illumination at a temperature of 24± 2oC. At 24, 48 and 72 hours three treatment vessels and six control vessels were randomly selected and sacrificed to allow determination of the number of algal cells.

The 72-h ErC50 and EbC50-values (72 h) were calculated to be 0.475 and 0.311 mg/L respectively. The NOEC for growth rate was determined to be 0.247 mg/L.
