Description of key information

The test item was investigated for its acute toxicity in algae within a static test system. After the 72 hour exposure no signs of toxicity were observed. The EC50 was estimated to be > 100 mg/L. The NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The test item was investigated for its acute toxicity in a static test system using Selenastrum capricornutum (Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) according to the EU Method C.3, adopted in 1992. The test item was not water soluble. Algae were exposed to a test item suspension with a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L for 72 hours. The actual concentration was below the detection limit of 0.001 mg/L. Algal growth was not inhibited by the test substance, but very slightly enhanced: by 16.7 % (based on the area under the growth curves) or by 3.3 % (based on the average growth rates). This marginal enhancement of algal growth was not attributed to an effect of the test substance. No signs of toxicity were observed. The EC50 was estimated to be > 100 mg/L and NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/L. The test item is considered to be not toxic for algae.
