Description of key information

In the key study, the acute toxicity to zebrafish (Danio rerio) of cetrimonium bromide was determined to be 0.2 mg/L representing LC50 (96h).

In other studies, LC50 (96h) values were obtained for other freshwater fish species: Japanese rice fish (Oryzia latipes) and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) with LC50 values varying between 0.1-0.28 mg/l. In addition, a value for LC50 (24h) was established to 0.6 mg/l for rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss).

Additional information

Three different LC50(96h) values have been identified for cetrimonium bromide on acute toxicity to fish. All LC50(96h) values are in the same range and varied between 0.1 and 0.28 mg/l. The LC50(96h) determined in the key study performed according to OECD Guideline 203 and according to GLP is chosen for the CSA based on the well-documented study. One study identified a correlation between toxicity of alkyl trimethylammonium compounds and the presence of organic matter. The presence of organic matter seems to reduce the toxicity of alkyl trimethylammonium compounds in a dose-dependent manner. LC50 values obtained in the laboratory without the presence of organic matter, is therefore likely to overestimate the actual toxicity under natural conditions.
