Conclusion on classification
'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' is neither in the Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC nor in Annex I of Regulation EC 1272/2008 including Commission Regulation EC No 790/2009.
According to the information summarized in this chapter, 'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' should be classified as long-term aquatic hazard category chronic 1 with the following reasons:
- The acute toxicity values are all above 100 mg/L representing three trophic levels obtained in short-term toxicity tests towards algae and fish and Daphnia.
- Long term toxicity on daphnia magna was determined to be NOEC = 4.43 µg/L
- 'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' is ready biodegradable.
- The bioaccumulation potential is expected to be moderate for 'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' based upon its log Kow and calculated BCF values. Although a measured log Kow of > 4.5 indicates a potential for bioaccumulation, it was shown in a bioconcentration study using one of the constituents of 'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' (bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate) as test substance, that despite its high log Kow value, the bioaccumulation potential was measured to be very low.
Based on this result, it is assumed that also the other two constituents of 'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' (benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and dibenzyl adipate) will not be accumulative.
With the data listed above, 'Reaction mass of benzyl 2-ethylhexyl adipate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and dibenzyl adipate' should be classified according to GHS (Regulation EC 1272/2008 including Commission Regulation EU-286/2011) as as long-term aquatic hazard category chronic 1.
