Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Appearance: Kalkstickstoff (calcium cyanamide, technical grade) is a black solid with a characteristic odour at 20 °C and 1013 hPa.

Melting point: The melting range of "Kalkstickstoff" (calcium cyanamide, technical grade) according DIN 51004 was determined to be 1145 °C to 1217 °C.

Boiling point: was not determined.

Density: The density of calcium cyanamide (pure and technical grade) was determined to be 2.3–2.36 g/cm³ at 20 °C.

Particle size: The mass median diameter of calcium cyanamide, technical grade (Kalkstickstoff) was determined to be 40 µm.

Vapour pressure: 0.51 Pa at 20 °C (read-across from hydrogen cyanamide)

Partition coefficient: log Pow = –0.72 (read-across from hydrogen cyanamide)

Water solubility: It is technically not possible to determine the water solubility of calcium cyanamide, as the substance is immediately transformed to (hydrogen) cyanamide.

Solubility in organic solvent: was not determined.

Surface tension: The surface tension of the "Kalkstickstoff" (calcium cyanamide, technical grade) was 64.38 mN/m.

Flash point: was not determined.

Auto-flammability: Calcium cyanamide, technical grade (Kalkstickstoff) did not ignite up to a temperature of 850 °C.

Flammability: Kalkstickstoff is considered to be non flammable. In addition, no flammability in contact with water and no pyrophoric abilities are expected.

Explosiveness: Based on the molecular structure of calcium cyanamide, technical grade (Kalkstickstoff) does not have to be classified with respect to explosiveness.

Oxidising properties: Based on the molecular structure of calcium cyanamide, technical grade (Kalkstickstoff) does not have to be classified with respect to oxidising properties.

pH: The pH of a 1 % dispersion of calcium cyanamide technical grade in deionised water was determined to be 12.5.

Dissociation constant: does not dissociate.

Viscosity: was not determined (calcium cyanamide is a solid).

Additional physico-chemical information:

The dusting tendency of the mixture “Perlka” concerning alveolar penetrating dust was determined to be very low (< 9.01 mg/kg).

Additional information

Available experimental data for vapour pressure, partition coefficient (octanol/water), and dissociation constant for cyanamide are used in a read-across approach for the assessment of calcium cyanamide.

Upon dissolution in water calcium cyanamide is fast transformed to hydrogen cyanamide. Thus, upon release of calcium cyanamide to water the environmental distribution and exposure is driven by the physico-chemical/fate properties of cyanamide.
