First-aid measures

General information: Remove contaminated clothes. On danger of unconsciousness place victim stable in side position for transportation. On complaints and symptoms take care of medical treatment.

After inhalation: On self-protection remove victim from danger area to fresh air, lay victim down calmly. On apnoea apply aspirator. Take care of medical treatment.

After skin contact: Thoroughly rinse affected skin sections with much water. On contact with liquified gas immediately rise effected areas with warm water (30°C).

After eyes contact: Thoroughly rise affected eye for 15 minutes on spread lids under running water, protect unaffected eye, previous remove contact lenses. Take care for ophthalmological treatment.

After ingestion: Ingestion is not considered a potential route of exposure.

Medical advices: Decontamination, symptomatic treatment. No specific antidot known. Don’t apply active pharma-ceutical ingredients of the adrenaline-ephedrine-group because of heart arrhythmia risk.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing agents: No restriction, all known extinguishing means can be used: water spray, carbon dioxide, extinguishing foam or powder. Product itself doesn’t burn, but packings may be burnable. Extinguishing agents should be oriented to the fire surroundings.

For safety reasons unsuitable extinguishing agents: Water jet.

Specific hazards by product, combustion products or formed gases: Exposure to fire may cause containers to rupture/explode. Non flammable, but on heating release of toxic and corrosive fumes possible: hydrogen chloride HCl, hydrogen fluoride HF, carbon monoxide CO, carbonyl chloride COCl2, carbonyl fluoride COF2, chlorine Cl2.

Specific protective equipment on fire-fighting: Use pressure air respirator at low aeration and in closed rooms. On extreme conditions a chemical protection suit might be necessary.

Accidental release measures

Person-related safety precautions: Evacuate area, wear protective equipment, especially self-contained breathin apparatus when entering area unless atmosphere is proved to be safe (see also chapt. 8.2 – personal protection). Ensure adequate air ventilation.

Measures for environmental protection: Try to stop release. Prevent from entering sewers, basements and workpits, or any plyce where accumulation can be dangerous.

Clean-up methods: Ventilate area.

Handling and storage

Handling:

Information for safe handling: Avoid release, inhalation of gas, contact with eyes, skin and cloths, long-term or repeated exposure.

Technical protection measures: Ensure very good ventilation of the work room to maintain oxposures to within occupational exposure limits.

Rules on handling: Prevent suck-back of water and don’t allow back-feed into the container. Use only properly specified equipment which is suitable for this product, its supply pressure and temperature. Contact your gas supplier if in doubt, and refer to supplier’s container handling instructions.

Information about fire and explosion protection: Product is not inflammable and explosive. Because of pressurised bottled gas prevent from heating and open flames.

Storage:

Storage group according to the VCI (Association of Chemical Industries) cumulative storage concept: 2A: pressurised, liquefied and pressure dissolved gases.

Technical measure and storage conditions: Prevent containers / gas bottles from falling down. Keep container below 50°C in a well-ventilated place.

Packing materials: Packing materials are to be proofed on resistance before use.

Requirements to be met by storerooms and receptacles: Don’t store in gateways, passages, stairways, hallways open to public, roofs, attics and work-rooms. Label receptacles clearly and durably. Preferable store in original receptacles, keep densely closed.

Information on cumulative storage: Nothing but substances of similiar properties should be cumulatively stored. Cumulative storage with substances as follows is prohibited:

- medicinal products, food and feedings stuffs including additives.

- infective, radioactive and explosive substances.

- high reactive organic peroxides and other oxidising substances.

Cumulative storage with substances as follows may be allowed under special conditions:

- burnable and not burnable solids and liquids.

- low reactive organic peroxides and other oxidising substances of low reactivity.

- other pressurised, liquefied, and pressure dissolves gases, and aerosol packages.

The substance should not be cumulatively stored with substances where dangerous chemical reactions are possible, e.g. alkali metals.

Exposure controls / personal protection

occupational exposure limit according to TRGS 900 (Germany): 3600 mg/m³ 8-h-time-weighed-average

occupational exposure limit (Austria): 500 ppm/1800 mg/m³ 8-h-time-weighed-average, 1000 ppm/3600 mg/m³ 15-min-short-term-exposure

occupational exposure limit (European Union): 1000 ppm/3600 mg/m³ 8-h-time-weighed-average

time weighed average (USA / NIOSH): 1000 ppm/3500 mg/m³, 1250 ppm/4375 mg/m³ 15-min-short-term-exposure

PNEC values:

PNEC (water): 250 µg/l; PNEC (sediment): 416 µg/kg; PNEC (soil): 239 µg/kg

Technical measures to avoid exposition: Preferably handle in closed gadgets. Provide very good ventilation of the workroom, local exhaust necessary to maintain exposures within occupational exposure limits.

Body protection: Commonly special body protection not necessary, regular work clothing sufficient.

Respiratory protection: Required on release of the gaseous substance: Use half mask to EN 140 or full mask to EN 136 fitted with filter to EN 143-P1. Remind wearing time limits. On concentrations above limitations of filter devices or on oxygen contents above 17 % or on ambiguous conditions use self-contained respiratory protective devices.

Eye protection: Sidewards closed goggles to EN 166 are required.

Hand protection

Protection gloves are not required commonly, on permanent skin contact gloves for low mechanic and substantial stress are enough. Protection gloves to be applied have to comply with the specifications of EU directive 89/686/EEC und EN 374, e.g. on full contact:

Glove matter: Butyl rubber, Thickness: 0,3 mm, Penetration time: > 480 Min.

Feet protection: On handling of gas containers feet protection shall be applied.

Skin protection: Skin protection products are not as effective as protection gloves, so suitable protection gloves should be preferred if possible. If protection gloves can not be worn apply water insoluble skin protection substances to clean skin before start of work and after each break and thoroughly embrocate. Before breaks and at the end of work skin cleaning with water and soap necessary. After cleansing fatty skin care products should be applied.

Occupational hygiene: Avoid aspiration of the gaseous substance. Change contaminated clothes and don’t reuse it until cleaned. Don’t smoke, eat and drink at the workplace.

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to be avoided: Stable under normal conditions. Avoid open flames, high temperatures, direct sun light.

Substances to be avoided: Alkali and earth alkali metals.

Dangerous decomposition products: Hydrogen chloride HCl, hydrogen fluoride HF, carbon monoxide CO, carbonyl chloride COCl2, carbonyl fluoride COF2, chlorine Cl2.

Dangerous chemical reactions:

Reacts violently with alkali and earth alkali metals. Catalytic decomposition in presence of powdery aluminium and zinc.

Disposal considerations

Disposal of residues and wastes of the product: Do not discharge into any place where accumulation could be dangerous. Contact supplier if guidance is required. Preferably return unused product to vendor for recycling or destruction.

European Waste Catalogue Code: 16 05 04* gases in pressure containers (including halons) containing dangerous substances

Disposal of contaminated packaging: Return cylinders to vendor, disposable cylinder is to be disposed according to local regulations.
