Use of sodium chromate as an anticorrosion agent of the carbon steel in sealed circuit of gas absorption appliances up to 0.70% by weight (as Cr6+) in the refrigerant solution

Sodium chromate is used as corrosion inhibitor in the carbon steel sealed circuit of the gas absorption heat pumps (GAHP). The natural gas driven absorption heat pumps differ from conventional electric heat pumps by the fact that the compression of the refrigerant is driven by a thermal compressor rather than an electric compressor. The gas driven thermal compressor allows a high thermal lift of 80°C required to heat even radiators. The GAHP enables the energy, environmental and economic advantages of the heat pump principle (use of renewable energy sources such as air, water and ground) also into existing buildings (retrofit sector), which represents the largest opportunity of emission reduction (CO2, and other pollutants) for the European building stock.

The system works with a natural refrigerant solution based on NH3 and H2O (with zero global warming potential) which requires the use of a corrosion inhibitor. Sodium chromate in a concentration of up to 0.7% by weight (as Cr6+) is the corrosion inhibitor used in these systems.
