Description of key information

A study performed for boric acid according to EU Method A6 reported a water solubility of 49.2 g/L. It is anticipated that if Orthoboric acid, potassium salt could be isolated from the chemical matrix in which it is made, it would exhibit essentially the same water solubility value as boric acid since, in a water environment, this salt will exist in equilibrium with boric acid, and boric acid will be the most abundant species present under these circumstances.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
49.2 g/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The difference between the determined water solubility for boric acid (Cordia JA et al (2003)) and the literature value (47.2 g/L, Mellor (1980)) could be explained by the fact that the two protocol methods used in each case were different. It is anticipated that if Orthoboric acid, potassium salt could be isolated from the chemical matrix in which it is made, it would exhibit essentially the same water solubility value since, in a water environment, this salt will exist in equilibrium with boric acid, and boric acid will be the most abundant species present under these circumstances.
