Phototransformation in air:

The atmospheric oxidation of Cardanol half-life was estimated using the level III multimedia model. It was estimated that Cardanol shows rapid degradation in the air medium as the half life period of Cardanol in air was reported as 0.9275 hours.

Hydrolysis

The hydrolysis rate constant of Cardanol was estimated to be 0.000000000155 cm3/molecule-sec in half life of 0.826 Hrs.

Phototransformation in water:

No experimental data available. As this study is not a standard information requirement in REACH and there is no indication from the CSA on the need to investigate further the fate and behaviour of the substance (Annex X requirement), no further testing is considered necessary.

Biodegradation in Water:

The cardanol 13.4130 and cardol 10.5 EO were tested to find how biodegradable they were and their biodegradation followed by DOC removal. They were found to be highly degradable, up to 80% DOC removal after 28 day. Weight of evidence for similar category of chemicals also shows these chemicals to be readily biodegradable.

Thus, it is expected that the chemical cardanol (CAS 37330 -39 -5) shall be biodegradable.

Biodedegradation in Water & Sediment:

This end point was considered for waiver since in accordance with column 2 of Annex IX of the REACHregulation this testing does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable

Biodegradation in Soil:

Cardanol is 50% biodegradable in soil in 30 days (half-life) indicating that the subatance is not persistant in soil and hence readily biodegradable in soil. In addition, this end point can be considered for waiver since in accordance column 2 with Annex IX of the REACHregulation this testing does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable.
