Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
read-across based on grouping of substances (category approach)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Fenruari 2016
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Measurement performed by the registrant using a state-of-the-art tensiometer.
Justification for type of information:
REPORTING FORMAT FOR THE ANALOGUE APPROACH
1. HYPOTHESIS FOR THE ANALOGUE APPROACH
Propanoic acid, 2-hydroxy-, C12-15-alkyl esters / 93925-36-1 / 300-338-1 contains the C12 and C14 alkyl lactates also present in Propanoic acid, 2-hydroxy, C12-C16 (even numbered) alkyl esters.
The surface activity of the second one is expected to be very similar if not equal to the first one.
2. SOURCE AND TARGET CHEMICALS
Both the target and the analogue are produced by esterification of fatty acids and lactate.
3. ANALOGUE APPROACH JUSTIFICATION
Since there is a significant overlap and similarity between the analogue measured and the target substance, read-across is here justified for surface tension.
Qualifier:
no guideline required
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Biolin Attension 701 surface tension meter employing a Du Nuoy ring.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
ring method
Surface tension:
34.3 mN/m
Remarks on result:
other: The result of 5 replicate readings using a Biolin Attension 701 surface tension meter employing a Du Nuoy ring. Performance of the ring was confirmed against Miili-Q purified water supplying a value of 72.5 mN/m at ambient temperature.

Description of key information

The alkyl lactates appear to be surface active in water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
34

Additional information

Substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m under the conditions of this method, should be regarded as being surface active.
