Description of key information

The determination of the surface tension of an aqueous solution of 400160 was conducted according to OECD guideline 115 resp. EU A. 5 method in compliance with GLP standards. The surface tension of an aqueous solution of 400160 (concentration: 90% saturation, corresponding to 9.08 mg/L DOC) was 55.11 ± 0.17 mN/m at 19.9 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
55.11
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
9.08

Additional information

The plate method was used for determination. A series of ten measurements was performed and the surface tension and standard deviations calculated. A verification measurement was performed after 60 minutes. As control, the surface tension of water (HPLC grade) was measured and compared to literature value.

The surface tension of an aqueous solution of 400160 (concentration: 90% saturation, corresponding to 9.08 mg/L DOC) was 55.11 ± 0.17 mN/m at 19.9 °C. The mean values of the two test series were not significantly different. The difference among means was 2.47%. The surface tension of the negative control was determined with a difference of 0.14% from the stated literature value (Vargaftik et al. (1983): surface tension of H2O water at 21.5 °C: is 72.52 mN/m). Therefore, the test result is considered valid.

As the determined surface tension of 400160 was lower than 60 mN/m, the test item is classified as surface active.
