In order to evaluate toxicological properties of the substance aluminium vanadium tetraoxide, information on the assessment entities aluminium ions and vanadium ions were considered. For a documentation and justification of that approach, please refer to the separate document attached to section 13, namely Read Across Assessment Report for aluminium vanadium tetraoxide.

The toxicity of aluminium vanadium tetraoxide may reasonably be considered to be determined by the bioavailability of the assessment entities aluminium ions and vanadium ions. Based on the read-across from aluminium substances and applying a weight of evidence approach (GLP-guideline studies) for genetic toxicity, classification for genotoxicity is not required for aluminium substances according to CLP (1272/2008/EC) classification criteria. Based on the available weight-of-evidence, and considering guideline-conform studies conducted under GLP both in vitro as well as in vivo, vanadium ions should also be considered void of genotoxicity. Similarly, classification of aluminium vanadium tetraoxide with respect to a mutagenic potential does not appear to be supported. Thus, according to EC Regulation No. 1272/2008, aluminium vanadium tetraoxide should not be considered to have a mutagenic potential, and hence classification or labelling is not required.
