Reference measurement with purified water

The surface tension of an aqueous preparation of the test item (90 % saturation concentration) at 20 °C was found to be in the

range between 62 mN/m and 66 mN/m.

In these experiments, no stable equilibrium state could be found within 6 hours. After a decrease by about 1 mN/m within the first

21 ± 5 minutes, the values increased steadily over the total measuring time of about 6 hours. Therefore, no definitive value for the surface tension can be given.

As the whole range of the curve over time in both determinations was above 60 mN/m, the statement can be made, that the test item was not surface active.

Several measurements had been performed with the plate method.

They showed much lower values, a still strenger increase with time and a worse reproducibility. Additionally, the plate was not wetted with the liquid, when the plate was removed after the experiments.

Therefore, these experiments were discarded.

Additional information

A GLP study was conducted in accordance with the OECD Guideline for the Testing of Chemicals. 15 „Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions" using the force which is required to withdraw a vertically suspended ring from the surface of the solution is measured. Additionally, measurements with the plate method were performed, but discarded.

BASF GLP study no. 15L00408 determined the surface tension of an aqueous preparation of the test item (90 % saturation concentration) at 20 °C to be 62 mN/m. The preparation of test item is not surface-active.
