Additional information

One study investigating the toxicity of Multi constituent ester of pentaerythritol 2-ethylhexanoate to algae is available. The semi-static study was conducted according to GLP and OECD guideline 201 using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test organism (Migchielsen, 2013). All test solutions were individually prepared. Preparation included a one-day magnetic stirring period to ensure reaching maximum dissolution. The resulting aqueous mixtures that contained a floating layer were subsequently left to settle overnight. The Water Accommodated Fraction’s (WAFs) were then collected by means of siphoning the middle fraction and used for testing. A final test was performed based on the results of a preceding combined limit/range-finding test. Six replicates of exponentially growing algal cultures were exposed to an untreated control whereas three replicates per test group were exposed to Multi constituent ester of pentaerythritol 2-ethylhexanoate WAFs prepared at loading rates of 1.0, 3.2, 10, 32 and 100 mg/L. The total test period was 72 hours and the initial algal cell density was 1E+04 cells/mL. Due to the complexity of the test substance, it was decided not to perform substance specific chemical monitoring. Multi constituent ester of pentaerythritol 2-ethylhexanoate reduced growth rate and inhibited the yield of this fresh water algae species significantly at WAFs prepared at loading rates of 32 mg/L and higher.

The EL50 for growth rate reduction (72h-ErL50) exceeded the highest test concentration, i.e. was above a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 100 mg/L. The EL50 for yield inhibition (72h-EyL50) corresponded to a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 70 mg/L. The 72h-NOEL for both growth rate reduction and yield inhibition equalled a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 10 mg/L.
