Additional information

Distilled tall oil, maleated is a UVCB with varying components, but comprising maleated fatty acids and maleated rosin acids. Three extended ready biodegradation studies have been conducted using Distilled tall oil, maleated, one to OECD 301B (Roulstone, 2014) and two following OECD 301D (EcoTox, 2014). Distilled tall oil, maleated was not found to be readily biodegradable within 28 days in any of the studies. All of the ready biodegradation screens do, however, provide evidence that Distilled tall oil, maleated has the potential to degrade. About 50% degradation of Distilled tall oil, maleated was observed after 42 days in the OECD 301B (Roulstone, 2014) and up to 63 or 67% degradation was observed in the two OECD 301D studies after 60 days (Sowders, 2014a and b). In the two OECD 301D studies sufficient degradation of Distilled tall oil maleated (> 60%) is observed within the 60 day period for the test substance to be considered 'not persistent'. A further study is available for Distilled tall oil, maleated assessing degradation in seawater. In this study 32.9% degradation was demonstrated after 28 days in the study (Hamilton Garrod 1995).

No adsorption desorption studies are available for Distilled tall oil, maleated. As Distilled tall oil, maleated is a poorly soluble UVCB substance it is extremely difficult to measure a Koc value experimentally. The Koc for this substance has therefore been calculated based on a measured Kow value, following the equation in the EU Technical Guidance Document (2003) and the ECHA Guidance Document R7a (2008): log Koc = 0.81 Log Kow + 0.1.

The Koc value for Distilled tall oil, maleated was calculated to be >43651.58 (log Koc >4.64) based on a measured log Kow value of >5.6.
