Direct brown 44 has been tested for acute toxicity study Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly Selenastrum capricornutum) according to OECD 201 (1984) and Royal Decree 363/1995 (BOE. 133 June 1995).

The result indicates that the dye is not toxic to Selenastrum capricornutum at a concentration of 100 mg/L of active ingredient within 72 hours of testing.
