Derivation of PNECs according to the CHARM model [1]

Alternatively to the PNECseawater derived according to the Technical Guidance Documents (EC 2000), PNECs according to the CHARM model are determined.

In CHARM, effect data obtained with freshwater and marine organisms are not distinguished. Values for acute toxicity are available for each three freshwater and marine species, while NOECs for three freshwater trophic levels (for NOECfish see above) and one marine species are available. An extrapolation factor of 10 has to be applied to the lowest chronic NOEC. Applying these factors to the lowest NOEC (1.10 mg/L, Skeletoma costatum), the PNECs are:

PNECpelagic = 1.10 mg/L / 10 = 0.11 mg/L = 110 µg/L

According to CHARM, the PNECpelagic acute is calculated by dividing the extrapolation factor by 10. Therefore an assessment factor of 1 should be used for batchwise discharges.

PNECpelagic acute = 1.10 mg/L / 1 = 1.10 mg/L
