Toxicity of phosphoric acid, potassium salt (2:3), dihydrate to sediment organisms is not expected

Additional information

Long-term toxicity shall be proposed by the registrant if the results of the chemical safety assessment indicate the need to investigate further the effects of the substance and/or relevant degradation products on sediment organisms. Phosphoric acid, potassium salt (2:3), dihydrate is a highly soluble salt, which decomposes immediately in the aqueous medium by reacting with water. Furthermore, low adsorption potential is expected and thus, sediment exposure once the substance enters the aquatic phase is unlikely. The major dissociation products of this substance are PO4-3 and K+ions. Both potassium and phosphate are essential elements and therefore, they are not expected to cause adverse effects, as organisms posses internal mechanisms in order to regulate them. Furthermore, the results from the aquatic acute toxicity tests conducted at three different trophic levels (fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae) show neither lethal nor sub-lethal effects of phosphoric acid, potassium salt (2:3), dihydrate on these organisms up to a concentration of 100 mg/L. Based on this information and considering animal welfare, long-term toxicity testing on sediment organisms is not deemed necessary.
