Description of key information

There is no potential for persistence of Betaines, C12-14 (even numbered)-alkyldimethyl  in the aquatic environment and no exposure to sediment is expected.

According to column 2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex IX, section 9.1, long-term toxicity testing shall only be proposed if the chemical safety assessment indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms. Following the test on ready biodegradability Betaines, C12-14 (even numbered)-alkyldimethyl is readily biodegradable and rapidly degraded by microbially induced processes in water/sediment tests. Due to the readily biodegradability and the low adsorption potential to sediment (Kow = -0.4) it is not likely that they can be found in the aquatic environment and sediment in high concentrations. In summary, there is no potential for persistence of alkyl dimethyl betaines in the aquatic environment and no exposure to sediment is expected.
