Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No experimental data evaluating the chronic toxicity of Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) to aquatic invertebrates are available. Therefore, data from a structurally related category member, Fatty acid, C12-14 (even numbered), methyl ester (CAS No. 308065-15-8) are used as read-across in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Both substances are fatty acids esterified with methanol, containing C12 -16 (source substance) and C12-16 (even numbered) and C18 unsaturated (target substance) fatty acids. Furthermore, the water solubility values (< 1 mg/L for both) of these two substances indicate that a comparable behaviour in water can be expected. Based on this information, it is justified to use the toxicity data from Fatty acids, C12 -14 (even numbered), methyl esters as read-across for Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, for this endpoint.

The long-term toxicity of Fatty acids, C12-14 (even numbered), methyl ester (CAS 308065-15-8) to aquatic invertebrates was investigated according to OECD guideline 211 and GLP using Daphnia magna as test organism. A full dose-response test with Water Soluble Fractions of the test item was performed since preliminary testing (acute immobilisation test) has shown toxic (mortality) and physical effects (daphnids being trapped at the water surface) on Daphnia magna, when tested with Water Accommodated Fractions of the test item. Nominal loading rate WSFs between 1 and 100 mg/L were tested over an exposure time of 21 days. No significant effects on the reproductive output or any other measured endpoint were observed in the control and any treatment after 21 days exposure time. Thus, the 21d-NOELR value is determined to be >= 100 mg/L.

Based on the above information, similar results as those of the test conducted on the structurally related category member (according to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5) can be expected for Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters.
