Exposure controls / personal protection

General:

Residue, nickel sulphide leaching may cause cancer by inhalation. It is harmful if swallowed and it may cause sensitization by skin contact. It may also cause harm to the unborn child. It is considered as dangerous for the environment and toxic to aquatic organisms. It may also cause long term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

Residue, nickel sulphide leaching is manufactured, handled, analysed, stored, used and disposed under appropriate and strictly controlled conditions. The whole lifecycle has been taken into account. The information of the hazards is available and any possible risks rising from the handling of the intermediate are identified and managed. Operations to minimise risks, emissions and exposure are determined and implemented.

Substance handling and storage related procedures are well documented and strictly supervised by the site operator. The procedures cover both normal operating conditions and non-routine operational circumstances (such as maintenance and accidents/emergency situations). The procedures, documents and actions comply with the existing health, safety and environmental legislation. Possible risks are taken into account and activities in abnormal conditions are well-known, elaborated managed and documented.

The company has the ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 8001 certificates. All operations are led, controlled and followed by means of the quality, environment and occupational health and safety standards. External audits are carried out once per year by the certified company. In addition to the external audits the operations are observed by internal and customer audits every year.

Human exposure:

Exposure to residue, nickel sulphide leaching is possible in the forms of solid cake and dust.

Work, hygiene and safety instructions are followed by all employees of the company. Also the employees of the partner companies are complied with the same procedures.

Protective equipments are worn in compliance with the company´s protective equipment matrix. At the raw material storage and at the leaching department where reaction mass of hematite and iron hydroxide oxide is manufactured protective clothing, gloves, hearing protectors, helmet, goggles and protection shoes are compulsory, breathing apparatus must be used when needed according to company´s equipment matrix.

All company´s work-hygiene-related activities are coordinated by a work hygiene group. Production departments and personnel groups are represented in the work hygiene group. Its tasks include the monitoring of the work-related exposure factors related to company´s workplace environment and the overseeing of related development actions. The group approves the annual plan of action and sets the operational objectives.

The company observes to maintain a list of those employees who are occupationally exposed to substances involving the risk of cancer (ASA list) and to submit annually a list of the said substances and of the persons exposed to them to a local authority subordinated to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The company maintains a constant dialogue contact with the local authorities and keeps the authorities informed of monitoring measurements and development operations connected to work hygiene in conjunction with annual meetings.

Personnel hygiene and the general tidiness level have significant roles when controlling the exposures to chemicals and products. Everyone must personally contribute to general tidiness and seek out means of improving it. Tidiness is observed monthly with so called tidiness check tours.

Normal cleaning and maintenance tasks are done according to work instructions followed by employees. Every production department have their own particular instructions. Some of the cleaning and maintenance tasks are outsourced. People responsible for cleaning and maintenance participate regularly in the training concerning their work.

Environment exposure:

Environment emissions are managed according to the Environmental permission licensed by the authorities. Emissions are under strict control.

The most important ways of minimising the releases to environment are to comply with the work instructions under normal production conditions. In cases of accidents and when waste is generated procedural and control technologies are used to minimise emissions and exposure.

Advice:

Occupational exposure controls: Take note of Directive 98/24/EC on the protection of the health and safety of workers from the risks related to the chemical agents at work.

Contact with skin, eyes and contaminated clothing shall be avoided. Avoid breathing dust and repeated exposure.
