Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties

Description of key information

N,N-Didecyl-N-methyl-poly(oxyethyl)ammonium Propionate has an oxygen balance in the range –260 to –285, significantly lower than the critical
value of –200, providing further confirmation that it is not an explosive substance. Additionally, the test item does not contain any of the reactive
groups normally associated with explosive properties.
Thus, it is considered that a test to determine explosive properties is not required.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

The determination of explosive properties can be exempted when available thermodynamic information or the absence of certain reactive groups in the structural formula or it’s “oxygen balance” establishes beyond reasonable doubt that the substance is incapable of decomposing, forming gases or releasing heat very rapidly.

N,N-Didecyl-N-methyl-poly(oxyethyl)ammonium Propionate is a polar quaternary alkyl ammonium salt. Such compounds are in common use and are well known not to posses explosive properties. Furthermore, N,N-Didecyl-N-methyl-poly(oxyethyl)ammonium Propionate has an oxygen balance in the range –260 to –285, significantly lower than the critical value of –200, providing further confirmation that it is not an explosive substance. Additionally, N,N-Didecyl-N-methyl-poly(oxyethyl)ammonium Propionate does not contain any of the reactive groups normally associated with explosive properties

Thus, it is considered that a test to determine explosive properties is not required.
