Executive summary:

The test chemical was subjected to biodegradation test by taking activated sludge as inoculums at 30 mg/L concentration. Biodegradation was analysed by using two parameters namely BOD and GC. The initial concentration of test chemical was 100 mg/L.The test chemical showed 52 % biodegradability by BOD parameter and 73 % by GC parameter by using activated sludge as inoculumin 28 days. On the basis of percent biodegradability it is concluded that test chemical is readily biodegradable.

Description of key information

Biodegradation in water of test chemical Alcohols, C8-18, ethoxylated (1 - 2.5 moles ethoxylated)(CAS no. 157707-43-2)was done by using experimental data from read across chemicals in all the studies of read across chemical showed that percent biodegradability of test chemical is greater than 70 % . On the basis of percent biodegradability it is concluded that test chemical Alcohols, C8-18, ethoxylated (1 - 2.5 moles ethoxylated) (CAS no. 157707-43-2) is readily biodegradable in nature.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

Biodegradation in water of test chemical Alcohols, C8-18, ethoxylated (1 - 2.5 moles ethoxylated)(CAS no. 157707-43-2) was predicted by using data from structurally and functionally similar read across chemicals. The studies are as mentioned below:

In first experimental study the test chemical, present at 2-5 mg/L in test system , exhibited mean values of 74, 77, and 84% of its theoretical BOD in 30 days using an activated sludge inoculum in the Closed Bottle test. Based on the percent degradation obtained it is assessed that the test substance is readily biodegradable.

The next experimental study was reviewed from authoritative database in this study the test chemical was subjected to biodegradation test by taking activated sludge as inoculums at 30 mg/L concentration. Biodegradation was analysed by using two parameters namely BOD and GC. The initial concentration of test chemical was 100 mg/L. The test chemical showed 52 % biodegradability by BOD parameter and 73 % by GC parameter by using activated sludge as inoculums in 28 days. On the basis of percent biodegradability it is concluded that test chemical is readily biodegradable.

Last experimental study was also done from authoritative database in this study the test chemical was subjected to biodegradation test by taking activated sludge as inoculums at 30 mg/L concentration. Biodegradation was analysed by using three parameter namely BOD, TOC and UV Vis . The initial concentration of test chemical was 100 mg/L. The test chemical showed 74 % biodegradability by BOD parameter 44 % by TOC parameter and 62 % by UV vis parameter by using activated sludge as inoculum in 28 days. On the basis of percent biodegradability it is concluded that test chemical is readily biodegradable.

By considering results of all the studies mentioned above it can be concluded that test chemical chemical Alcohols, C8-18, ethoxylated (1 - 2.5 moles ethoxylated)(CAS no. 157707-43-2) is expected to be readily biodegradable in nature.
