One study, investigating the toxicity of Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4) to aquatic algae, was used as read across to Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers, hydrogenated (CAS No. 68783-41-5), in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. grouping of substance and read across approach.

Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly Selenastrum capricornutum) was used as test organism and exposed to WAFs under static conditions (Kelly, 2002). The WAFs were prepared through direct addition of the test substance to the medium and stirred for 48h. Thereafter 800 mL of the WAF were siphoned off for use as test medium. The EL50 (72 h) and NOELR (72 h) were both determined as > 1000 mg/L (nominal).

A further static study according to ISO guideline 10253 was conducted with a category member, i.e. Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, trimers (CAS No. 68937-90-6), using Skeletonema costatum. The study resulted also in an EL50 (72 h) and NOELR (72h) > 1000 mg/L (nominal) (Källqvist, 2004). The author concludes that no effect up to the limit of the water solubility of the tested substance (< 0.37 mg/L) was observed.

Thus, based on the above mentioned results, it can be concluded that Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers, hydrogenated (CAS No. 68783-41-5) or any other substance within the category does not show any acute or chronic toxicity to algae up to the limit of water solubility.
