A study was performed to assess the acute toxicity of the test material to Daphnia magna. The method followed that described in the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1984) No 202, "Daphnia sp, Acute Immobilisation Test and Reproduction Test" referenced as Method C.2 of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC (which constitutes Annex V of Council Directive 67/548/EEC), US Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40, Part 797, Section 1300 and US EPA Draft Ecological Effects Test Guidelines OPPTS 850.1010.

The test material was known to degrade immediately on contact with water forming N-butylpyridinium chloride, hydrochloric acid and aluminium oxides. Daphnids were exposed to an aqueous solution of the test material degradation products at concentrations of 1,0, 1.8, 3.2, 5.6, 10, 18, 32, 56 and 100 mg/L for 48 hours under static test conditions. The number of immobilised Daphnia were recorded after 24 and 48 hours. The 48-Hour EC50 for Daphnia magna based on nominal test concentrations was 10 mg/L with 95% confidence limits of 8.0 - 13 mg/L. The No Observed Effect Concentration was 3.2 mg/L. Chemical analysis of the test preparations was carried out using N-butylpyridinium chloride as a marker. Analysis of the test preparations at 0 and 48 hours showed measured test concentrations of N-butylpyridinium chloride to be near nominal and so the results are based on nominal test concentrations.
