Description of key information

In a GLP study conducted according to EU Method A.10, EDDS acid was considered "not highly flammable".

In a GLP study conducted according to EU Method A.10, the flammability of EDDS acid was examined on six occasions by the application of a flame or hot wire to a strip of the powdered material (250 mm long, 20 mm wide and 10 mm high). The test material ignited briefly, but no flame propagation occurred. EDDS acid is considered 'not highly flammable' according to the test conditions (Gair et al. 2002).

In addition, in a GLP study conducted according to EU Method A.10, trisodium EDDS could not be ignited by a flame (van Helvoirt, 1993e). [Data on trisodium EDDS is considered relevant to use for understanding the potential flammability of EDDS acid, and is acceptable for using as read-across information].

Justification for classification or non-classification

EDDS acid and its trisodium salt were not easily ignited by brief contact with an ignition source in reliable tests and, therefore, would not be classified as flammable solids according to EU CLP or DSD regulations.
