Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information
Remarks:
melting point: 97°C
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
12 December 2000
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
1992
GLP compliance:
yes
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

SPS-100 could not be ignited with a flame and melted in contact with the ignition source. The molten test substance turned yellow.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The substance is not a flammable solid.
Executive summary:

A GLP study according to EC A.10 was performed. In the preliminary screening test SPS-100 could not be ignited with a flame but it melted in contact with the ignition source.

The substance is concluded to be not a flammable solid.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Justification for type of information:
Statement as presented in the study report was based on the structure of the substance and on experience in handling:

"SPS-100 does not contain groups that might lead to evolution of highly flammable gases in dangerous quantities.
Furthermore, no metals, transition metals, boron or silicon are present. Therefore, it can be concluded that the test substance is incapable of developing a dangerous amount of (flammable) gas in contact with air, damp air or water. Moreover, experience in handling shows that the test substance does not react with water."
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Justification for type of information:
In the report it was concluded that the substance has no pyrophoric properties:

"From the structural formula of SPS-100, it can be concluded that SPS-100 is not pyrophoric. The test substance does not contain any chemical group that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming into contact with air at room temperature (circa 20°C). Furthermore, experience in handling shows that the test substance does not ignite coming in contact with air."
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
data waiving: supporting information

Description of key information

Not a flammable solid (EC A.10: preliminary screening test).

No pyrophoric properties (based on experience in handling and structural features).

Not highly flammable in contact with water (based on experience in handling and structural features).

Self-heating is not a relevant property for this substance (melting point < 160°C).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Classification or non-classification according to CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008:

Not a flammable solid (negative in EC A.10)

Not a pyrophoric solid (experience in handling and the substance lacks functional groups that would imply this hazard)

No classification for the hazard "Substances which in contact with water emits flammable gases' (experience in handling and the substance lacks functional groups that would imply this hazard)

Not a self-heating substance (not a relevant property for this substance)
