The test was performed according to OECD guideline 201. Deviations from guideline were present to evaluate the difference between direct algal toxicity and indirect toxicity by light absorption, due to the coloured nature of the substance.

The performed algal test has demonstrated that the observed growth inhibition effect of the test substance was caused in a high degree by the indirect effect, i.e. the light absorption in the coloured test media. The indirect toxicity effect can be considered relevant only during small-scale laboratory testing as, due to the very large dilution factor, it is very unlikely to reach concentrated coloured solutions in the environment.

It can be concluded that the substance is not directly toxic to freshwater algae as its EC50 was determined to be higher than nominal 100 mg/L test substance.

In addition, it is important to underline a significant variability of the substance concentration in test vessels, as determined during the analytical monitoring. The mean recoveries found for the test concentrations analysed varied in the range of 85.0 % to 92.6 % of the respective nominal values for samples at 0 hours, and were found in the range of 57.8 % to 80.4 % for aged samples of 72 hours.

Despite this variation, the total mean recoveries per test concentration analysis amounted to 71.4 ± 19.3 %, 79.5 ± 14.7 %, and 86.5 ± 8.7 %, for nominal concentrations of 10, 32 and 100 µg/ml, respectively.

As the substance is hydrolytically stable, the loss during the test period can be explained by sedimentation, which could be observed visually.
