First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Transport to hospital (carbon monoxide and carbonyl
chloride (phosgene) poisoning is possible and pulmonary
oedema) In all cases, remove the patient from the accident
Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse with water
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with aqueous sodium borate or 10% aqueous
triethanolamine. Treat the parts that have been washed with
an oily cream (especially for chlorinated solvents)
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical attention

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Combustion products may contain carbon oxides, hydrogen
chloride and some carbonyl chloride (phosgene).

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Contain the spill. Use protective clothing as indicated
above. Collect and dispose of by incineration if recovery
is not possible

Handling and storage

Handling: Wear protective clothing, gloves (Tyvek, Edmond Snorkel
type) and respiratory protection (full face type) with a
suitable filter (Type Z2730). Avoid contact with eyes and
skin, work in a well ventilated area. Keep in the original
container. Prevent contact with catalysts (eg Iron (III)
chloride, amines, activated carbon, etc)

Storage: Store in enamelled, glass or polyethylene containers (these
do not cause decomposition)

requirements for transporting chlorinated hydrocarbons (d

Exposure controls / personal protection

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: The substance hydrolyses in water to yield carbon oxides
and hydrochloric acid. Carbonyl chloride may be generated
thermally. The substance reacts with potassium metal,
dimethylsulphoxide and peroxydisulphate

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance may be extracted using paraffin oil (eg
Solvesso) and recovered by distillation after
neutralisation with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The substance may be hydrolysed. The resulting solution may
be neutralised with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Recommended method. The substance may be incinerated at
1200 deg C. Waste gas treatment to remove hydrogen chloride
should be used.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended

Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: The normal method of destruction used by industry is
hydrolysis followed by neutralisation

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance will not enter the public domain
