Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

PNEC derivation not required for a transported isolated intermediate. Furthermore, acetophenone [CAS no. 98-86-2] and phenol [CAS no. 108-95-2] dominate with > 50 % (w/w) and < 20 % (w/w) in Acetophenone fraction [CAS no. 101316 -44 -3], which are not classified as to environmental hazards.

However, constituents other than acetophenone and phenol trigger environmental classification (see Section 2).

Conclusion on classification

ACETOPHENONE

Aquatic environment classification

Acetophenone proved to be readily biodegradable (64.7% biodegradation after 14 d).

The lowest acute EC/LC50 value in aquatic tests is the EC50 of 86.4 mg/L for algae.

Due to the fact that acetophenone is proven to be readily biodegradable and its log Kow of 1.65 is low, the substance is not classified as dangerous/hazardous for the environment according to Directive 67/548/EEC and according to the Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation):

Lowest reliable L(EC)50 value:                 86.4 mg/L algae

Ready biodegradable                                yes

log Pow                                                    < 3

Special concern:                                        no

According to 67/548/EEC Annex 1:      not classified

According to GHS:

Hazardous to the environment      not classified, no hazard statement

                                                      Reason for classification:    L(E)C50: 10 – 100 mg/L; readily biodegradable, log Pow<4

PHENOL

Aquatic environment classification

Due to the high degradation rates within a period of < 10 days phenol is ready biodegradable in waste water, freshwater, sea water, and at anaerobic conditions with inoculum created from activated sludge.

The lowest acute EC/LC50 value in aquatic tests is the EC50 of 3.1 mg/L, based on measured initial concentrations, obtained in a static 48-h acute toxicity test with Ceriodaphnia dubia (Oris et al. 1991).

Due to the ready biodegradability of phenol and its low log Pow, the substance is not classified as dangerous/hazardous for the environment according to Directive 67/548/EEC and according to the Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation):

Lowest reliable L(EC)50 value:                 3.1 mg/L Daphnids

Ready biodegradable                                yes

log Pow                                                     < 3

Special concern:                                       no

According to 67/548/EEC Annex 1:      not classified

According to GHS:

Hazardous to the environment      not classified, no hazard statement

Reason for classification:    L(E)C50 1-10 mg/L; readily biodegradable, log Pow<4
