Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

This substance is the product of a reaction between Zircon (EC no 239-019-6) and sodium hydroxide. In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII section 9.1.5, in accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, long-term aquatic toxicity testing shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms. As silicic acid (H4SiO4), zirconium(4+) salt (1:1), reaction products with sodium hydroxide is not found to be toxic to aquatic organisms, the substance is not classified for environmental effects. Consequently, no chemical safety assessment needs to be performed for the environment. Therefore, long-term toxicity testing is considered not required.   In addition, long-term toxicity to the constituent silicic acid, sodium salt is supported by a number of studies (q.v. supporting studies) showing a low order of long-term aquatic toxicity.

The above should be considered as an expert statement to waive the requirement for actual testing for long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates under REACH Annex IX for endpoint 9.1.5.
