Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Readily biodegradable: 76 – 90% (CO2 evolution) after 28 d (OECD 301B), read across.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Readily biodegradable: 76 – 90% (CO2 evolution) after 28 d (OECD 301B), read across.

Data on the ready biodegradability of Fatty acids, soya, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 93572-14-6) are not available.
The assessment was therefore based on studies conducted with the structurally similar substances Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 85049-37-2), Fatty acids, coco, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 92044-87-6) and 2-ethylhexyl oleate (CAS 26399-02-0), as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Further justification is given within the overall summary chapter 5 and within the analogue justification section 13. The ready biodegradability of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 85049-37-2) was tested in a study following OECD 301B under GLP conditions (Van der Kerken 1995). The degradation rate was determined by measuring the CO2 evolution of the activated sludge inoculum. At test termination after 28 days the substance was degraded by 76 – 81%. Comparable results were obtained in a second study following OECD 301B conducted with Fatty acids, coco, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 92044-87-6) under GLP conditions (King, 1994). The substance was degraded by 90% after 28 days of inoculation. The biodegradability of 2-ethylhexyl oleate (CAS 26399-02-0) was tested according to OECD Guideline 301 B (King, 1994). Based on CO2 evolution of the inoculum a degradation rate of 86.8% was determined after 28 days. Thus, based on the above mentioned results, and due to the structural and profile similarities of the substances, Fatty acids, soya, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 93572-14-6) is considered to be readily biodegradable.
