Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
oxidising solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
April from 12 to 15, 1991
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with generally accepted scientific standards and described in sufficient detail
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.17 (Oxidising Properties (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes
Contact with:
powdered cellulose
Sample tested:
other: reference: barium nitrate:cellulose 3:2
Parameter:
maximum burning rate
Result:
2.7 mm/s
Sample tested:
other: 1:19 sample-to-cellulose mixture
Parameter:
maximum burning rate
Result:
1.8 mm/s
Remarks on result:
other: steady burning with flame throughout the whole mass.
Remarks:
in a run of six tests.
Sample tested:
other: 1:9 sample-to-cellulose mixture
Parameter:
maximum burning rate
Result:
1.7 mm/s
Remarks on result:
other: steady burning with flame throughout the whole mass
Remarks:
in a run of six tests.
Sample tested:
other: 4:1 sample-to-cellulose mixture
Parameter:
maximum burning rate
Result:
1.1 mm/s
Remarks on result:
other: burning with flame, only the ledge of the pile. Only 1 of 6 tests propagates to second reference mark.
Remarks:
in a run of one test.

The maximum burning rate of the test mixture consisting of 5 % of substance (and 95 % powdered cellulose) was used for the comparison with the maximum burning rate of the reference mixture.

Interpretation of results:
other: not classified, according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
Conclusions:
Non oxidising.
Executive summary:

The oxidising properties of the substance was assessed according to the EU Mehtod A.17. The substance and the combustible substance (cellulose powder) were first sieved and dried and then they were mixed in three different proportions. The maximum burning rate of the mixtures was measured and the reactions occured were also noted. The maximum burning rate of the reference mixture barium nitrate/cellulose (60:40) was also measured and was then compared to the maximum burning rate of the test mixture.

Conclusion

Non oxidising.

Description of key information

Non oxidising

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
non oxidising

Additional information

EU Mehtod A.17

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance in the three different sample-to-cellulose ratios tested exhibited a mean burning rate lower than the mean burning rate of the reference mixture (barium nitrate/cellulose).

Therefore, the substance does not meet the criteria to be classified as oxidising agent.
