Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

EC10 = 41 mg LAS Na/kg dry weight

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for soil dwelling arthropods:
41 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

No experimental data on toxicity is available for the test item. Alternatively, experimental data for one source substances is available and a read-across approach is applied. Please refer to read-across justification document attached in IUCLID Section 13. For further supporting information please refer to respective REACH registration dossier of each source substance.

Source substance 2 (LAS NA, CAS 68411-30-3)

In a 21 day short term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, soil dwelling organisms (Folsomia fimetaria, Hypogastrura assimilis, Hypoaspis aculeifer) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with natural sandy, agricultural soil. Nominal test concentrations were 10, 25, 75, 275, and 800 mg/kg soil dry weight. Based on reproduction, The EC10 for H. assimilis was 100 mg/kg dry weight, and the EC10 for H. aculeifer was 82 mg/kg dry weight. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles, according to ISO 11267.

In a 21 day short term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, collembola (Folsomia sp.) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with three different natural sandy soils. Measured test concentrations were 8, 28, 79, 278, 793 mg/kg dry weight. There was little variation in toxicity among the three soil types and in the three salt species. The EC10 for Folsomia fimetaria in various soils ranged from 85-93 mg/kg dry weight soil. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles.

In a 28 day long term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, collembola (Folsomia candida) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with natural soil. Nominal test concentrations were 25-300 mg/kg soil. The EC10 for Folsomia candida based on reproduction was 205 mg/kg soil. This test is according to the Guideline ISO 11267.

In a 21 day short term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, collembola (Folsomia sp.) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with natural soil. Nominal test concentrations were 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg soil dry weight. The EC10 for F. fimetaria was 161 mg/kg soil dry weight based on reproduction. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles, according to Wiles and Krogh (1998).

In a 21 day short term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, collembola (Folsomia sp.) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study with natural soil. Nominal test concentrations were 0-1000 mg/kg dry soil. There was no effect on adult survival; however, there was a dose-related decrease in reproduction. The EC10 based on reproduction was 147 mg/kg dry weight soil. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles.

In a 10 week long-term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, mite (Platynothrus peltifer) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study. Nominal test concentrations were 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg/kg dry soil. The NOEC for P. peltifer, based on reproduction was 320 mg/kg dw soil. The LOEC was 1000 mg/kg dw soil. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles.

In a 8 week long-term toxicity test to terrestrial arthropods, collembola (Isotoma viridis) were exposed to Benzenesulfonic acid (C10-13-alkyl derivs., sodium salts, CAS 68411-30-3) in a laboratory study. Nominal test concentrations were 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg/kg soil dry weight. The EC10, based on growth was 41 mg/kg dry weight soil. The LOEC was 100 mg/kg dry weight soil. This toxicity study is classified as acceptable, as it is well documented and meets generally accepted scientific principles.
