Test method

The flash point is the lowest temperature, corrected to a pressure of 1013 hPa, at which the test item in a closed test vessel evolves vapour, under the conditions defined in the test method, in such amount that a flammable vapour/air mixture is produced in the test vessel, which could be ignited by a flame. The flash point indication is carried out visually by the operator, as well as automatically.

The flash point is corrected to a pressure of 1013 hPa.

Flp. = C + 0.025 - (1013 - p)

Flp.: flash point corrected to 1013 hPa in 'C

C: measured flash point in "C

p: ambient pressure in hPa

According to the guideline the temperature for the final flash point is rounded down with an accuracy of 0.5 °C.

After the vessel is cooled down / heated up to the test temperature a sample of the test item is transferred into the apparatus. The test vessel is filled with approx.2ml (< 100°C) or approx. 4 ml (> 100°C) of the test item. After temperature equilibration the ignition of the test item by dipping in the flame is carried out after the test item is held for a minimum of 60 seconds at constant temperature and equilibrium conditions. The flash point is detected visually and automatically.

ln a preliminary screening test the flash point is determined with a heating ramp of 5 K/min during which the ignition flame is dipped into the test item every 1 K. ln the main test the flash point is determined with temperature steps of 0.5 K. For each temperature step a fresh sample is used. The main test is performed at constant temperature and equilibrium conditions.

Apparatus

The following laboratory equipment was used for the study:

Normalab NPV310, lnv. No. 49405775

The lowest flash point corrected to 1013 hPa was rounded down with an accuracy of 0.5 °C giving a value of 62.0 °C.

Interpretation of results:
Category 4 (combustible liquids) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flash point of the test item was 62.0 °C under atmospheric conditions (1013 hPa).
Executive summary:

The flash point of the test substance was determined according to EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point), using a rapid equilibrium closed cup method.

The flash point of the test item has been determined to be 62.0°C under atmospheric conditions (1013 hPa).

The flash point of test substance is above the classification thresholds of 60°C of the Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP criteria) and lower than 93°C, the threshold of the UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).

Therefore, the test substance is NOT classified as a flammable liquid according to CLP criteria but is classified as a Flammable Liquid Category 4 according to UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).

Description of key information

The substance is NOT classified as a flammable liquid according to Regulation (EC) № 1272/2008 (CLP criteria).

The substance is classified as Flammable Liquid Category 4 according to UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS criteria).

Additional information

The flash point was determined according to the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, A.9. Flash point and DIN EN ISO 3679:2015: Determination of flash-point - Rapid equilibrium closed cup method. It is considered as a key study. The result is retained as key data for purpose of Chemical Safety Assessment.

This study is relevant for the classification regarding flammable properties.
