One non-GLP short-term toxicity study with aquatic invertebrates is available for C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6). Daphnids were exposed for 24 hours to nine different test concentrations. The EC50 determined after 24 hours was 18 mg/L. Since only limited short-term data involving aquatic invertebrates are available (24-hour test) for C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to another structurally related category members was conducted. Read-across data from the following alkyl sulfates was applied: C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) and C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1).

A key GLP study by Marshall (1993) was performed according to OECD 202 guideline. A static test was performed with six different concentrations in the range 0-10 mg a.i./L with Daphnia magna. The test resulted in the 48-h EC50 value of 2.8 mg a.i./L (nominal concentrations in agreement with the measured ones).

A supporting GLP study is available for C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) according to EG Guideline 92/69/EWG. In this study Daphnia magna was exposed in a static system to five concentrations up to 10 mg/L (nominal concentration corresponding to 9.5 mg/L of measured concentration) of C12-14AS Na of 29.8% purity (in water). The 48-hour EC50 value of 4.7 mg a.i./L (nominal concentration) could be determined for C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8). This value is expected to be a realistic EC50 for C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6). Moreover, a supporting GLP-study on daphnids is available for C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1, Scholz, 1997). In this study Daphnia magna was exposed to different concentrations of C12-18AS Na in a static system according to the EG Method C2. The 48-hour EC50 value was 15 mg/L.

Due to structural and property similarities with the tested category members it can be concluded that the above results apply also to C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6). The reliable 48-hour EC50 value for aquatic invertebrates is 2.8 mg/L.
