Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The partition coefficient of alpha pinene (log Kow = 4.46) was retained as worst case for the chemical safety assessment of the substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):

20 °C

Additional information

In a weight of evidence approach, literature data and experimental values were gathered for the main constituents of the substance. For dipentene and alpha pinene, a read-across approach was used, with d-limonene and l-alpha pinene/d-alpha pinene respectively. When several values were available for the same constituent, the arithmetic mean value was calculated.

In this way the following log Kow were determined for the main constituents of the sustance:

- terpinolene : log Kow = 4.36

- alpha pinene : log Kow = 4.46

- dipentene : log Kow = 4.43

- camphene : log Kow = 4.22

- alpha terpinene: log Kow = 3.97

- gamma terpinene : log Kow = 4.36

Therefore, based on the main constituents, the partition coefficient of the UVCB substance (log Kow) was estimated to be in the range 3.97 - 4.46.

The upper limit of this range was considered as the worst-case, relevant key value for the chemical safety assessement.

Thus the partition coefficient of alpha pinene (log Kow=4.46) was retained for the chemical safety assessment of the substance.
