First-aid measures

General:Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Seek medical attention for all burns, regardless how minor they may seem. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance

Inhalation: In case of exposure to fumes, fine particulates, powders, flakes, move to fresh air, lay patient down, get medical attention if discomfort persists.

Ingestion:  Rinse mouth thoroughly. Give 200-300 ml water to drink.  Do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

Skin contact:  Only slag, copper refining -grade 2 may cause skin sensitization. Use general hygiene measure for contact with the material: wash with soap and warm water. Seek medical attention in case of rash or skin discomfort - In case of contact with molten product, cool rapidly with water and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to remove molten product from skin because skin will tear easily. Cuts or abrasions should be treated promptly with thorough cleansing of the affected area.

Eye contact: slag, copper refining is not an eye irritant. Use general measures if eye irritations occur. Do not rub eyes. Remove any contact lenses. Flush eyes thoroughly with water, taking care to rinse under eyelids. If irritation persists, continue flushing for 15 minutes, rinsing from time to time under eyelids. If discomfort continues, consult a physician.

General advice: Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Seek medical attention for all burns, regardless how minor they may seem. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.   Notes to physician: Treat symptomatically. The effects might be delayed.

Fire-fighting measures

slag, copper refining is non-flammable

Unusual fire & explosion hazards:  Solid metal is not flammable; however, finely divided metallic dust or powder may form an explosive mixture with air. Do not use water on molten metal: Explosion hazard could result.

Specific hazards Fire or high temperatures create: Metal oxides.

Extinguishing media : sand, graphite, dolomite, sodium chlorite

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons:  Do not use water or halogenated extinguishing media.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.

PRECAUTIONS: Keep away from ignition sources (e.g., heat and open flames). Use with adequate ventilation. Keep container closed.

Accidental release measures

Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid inhalation of dust and/or fumes. Wear suitable clothing, breathing protection (P3 filter) and face protection. Restrict the area to those persons wearing respiratory protection. Do not allow unprotected people into the area until cleanup has been completed.

Environmental precautions: Avoid release to the environment. DO NOT empty into drains or waterways.

Material for containment: Place in a suitable container for recycling or disposal.

Methods for cleaning up: Ventilate the area thoroughly. Restrict the area to those persons wearing respiratory protection. Do not allow unprotected people into the area until cleanup has been completed. Allow spilled material to solidify and scrape up with shovels into a suitable container for recycle or disposal as hazardous waste.  Liquids containing powder should be absorbed in vermiculite, dry sand, or earth before putting into a suitable container for recycle or disposal as hazardous waste.  Collect material using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Place in a suitable container for recycling or disposal as hazardous waste DO NOT empty into drains or waterways .

Handling and storage

Safe handling:       Provide adequate ventilation.  Avoid generation and spreading of dust (use of hoods above smelters and appropriate dust filters).  Avoid inhalation of dust and small particles and contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves and/or RPE) in areas where dusts are present (smelting area and during critical maintenance operations).  Observe good industrial hygiene practices.  Perform appropriate monitoring campaigns to demonstrate absence of risks towards exposures of Cu, Ni, Pb, As..

Procedural and control technologies are to be used to minimise emission and any resulting exposure (when handling the substance, during cleaning and maintenance works and in case of accident). All procedures are to be well documented and supervised by the site operator. Only properly trained and authorised personnel may handle the substance.

Requirements to be met by storerooms and containers: In most cases the material will be cooled and stored before further use. In massive form, the risks of exposure are reduced. Store away from incompatible materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, avoiding contact with heat and acids.

Further information about storage conditions: Keep away from ignition sources (e.g. heat and open flames). Avoid contact with strong acids.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Occupational exposure limit values: Current OELs/TLV-TWAs (in mg/m3) in Belgium

Tin             2

Copper     1 (0,2 fume)

Lead          0.15

Nickel        1

Zinc           5

Arsenic      0.16

Antimony  0,5

Eye/face protection:If exposure is possible, use goggles or protective eyewear (EN 166).

Skin protection:Wear protective clothing.

Body / hand protection:When material is in molten state, wear gloves to protect against thermal burns. Suitable gloves can be recommended by the glove supplier.

Respiratory protection:In case of inadequate ventilation or risk of inhalation of dust. Use a (half) mask with filter of a class appropriate for the material concentration level in air. In case of lack of oxygen, use self-contained or stationary respiratory equipment (EN 149).

Personal hygiene:Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices. Wash hands after handling. Routinely wash work clothing and protective equipment to remove contaminant

Environmental exposure controls:Prevent the material from entering sewers, surface or soil waters.

Stability and reactivity

No information available

The substance is stable in normal conditions.

Disposal considerations

Product recommendation: Waste must be disposed of in accordance with the national and regional waste legislation.

Prevent the material from entering sewers, surface or soil waters.

Waste from surplus, unused product: recycling into the smelter is to be preferred rather than depositing the waste.
