Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
INFORMATION ON TEST MATERIAL
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): coal tar pitch (composite sample 8)
- Substance type: organic
- Lot/batch No.: A-10063A
- Expiration date of the lot/batch: 24 Sep. 2011

STABILITY AND STORAGE CONDITIONS OF TEST MATERIAL
- Storage condition of test material: room temperature in the dark
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
> 4 min
Remarks on result:
other: no progression of burning/combustion without ignition source

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test substance pile, which melted, burned with yellow flame and turned into a black residue. White smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished immediately, and no propagation of combustion was observed along 200 mm length of the pile within 4 min.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria

Description of key information

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test substance pile, which melted, burned with yellow flame and turned into a black residue. Without ignition source, the flame extinguished immediately, and no propagation of combustion was observed along 200 mm length of the pile within 4 min.
