Description of key information

1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate is readily biodegradable (99 % biodegradation after 28 days, fulfilling the 10-day window) under the test conditions of the modified Sturm test (OECD 301B). Therefore, and in accordance to REACH Annex VIII column 2, no experimental data are required on the hydrolysis of the target substance.

Experimental data on the adsorption/desorption behaviour of 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate are not available. New data do not need to be generated as the substance is readily biodegradable (see REACH Annex VIII, endpoint 9.3.1 "Adsorption/desorption screening", column 2, as well as REACH Annex IX, endpoint 9.3.3 "Further information on adsorption/desorption", column 2).

Further data regarding environmental fate and distribution of the substance are neither available nor required.

Additional information

1-methyl-1-phenylethyl peroxyneodecanoate in its marketed form (approximately 70 -80 % w/w active ingredient in phlegmatiser) is an organic peroxide, having a self-accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) of +10 °C.

At standard environmental temperature of 12°C 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl undergoes immediate degradation upon dissolution in aqueous media. Since the test item is not stable in aqueous solution at test temperature, the decomposition product neodecanoic acid is the relevant molecule for the assessment of environmental properties including ecotoxicity and bioaccumulation potential.

Information on the environmental fate of neodecanoic acid are estimated using EPISuite v4.1. SMILES Notation used: CC(C)(C)CCCCCC(=O)O. 

Neodecanoic acid has a log Kow below 4.5 (log Kow: 3.90; calculated value was determined using EPISuite v4.1/KOWWIN v1.67). Therefore, neodecanoic acid is expected not to accumulate in biota.

Based on QSAR estimation, the degradation product neodecanoic acid has no considerable potential for adsorption to soil and sediment particles or other solid organic matter. The adsorption coefficient to organic matter is Koc = 62.89 L/kg (calculated value was determined using EPISuite v4.1/KOCWIN v2.00).
