Description of key information

The substance is abiotically stable under environmentally relevant conditions. Its hydrolysis DT-50 is 9.8 years and 359 days at pH 7 and 8, respectively.

The substance was tested for ready biodegradability according to OECD 301 F (key study). Based on the results of the test performed, the substance cannot be considered as readily biodegradable. However, in the key study for ready biodegradability, the substance exhibited a significant amount of mineralization within 28 days, i.e., 53% to 64% (58% on average). Besides, at the end of the incubation periods, the plateau phase was not reached. Hence, although the substance cannot be regarded as rapidly biodegradable in the environment, it shows a significant potential for biodegradation and is not expected to be persistent. Biodegradation potential of this substance is furthermore supported by the fact, that other Sulfosuccinates of the N-2 Group are readily biodegradable.

The KOCvalue of the substance is between 10 and 100. This indicates that the substance is mobile according to FAO mobility classification, i.e. that it does not adsorb to soil or sediment.

The CSA conducted for this substance shows that there is no risk for the environment, since Risk Characterization Ratios for all uses of this CSR are 0.01 or lower.

According to REACH Annexes VIII to X, Column 2, Specific rules for adaptation from Column 1: Further degradation testing shall be considered if the chemical safety assessment […] indicates the need to investigate further the degradation of the substance”. Based on currently available data and current assessment, every usage covered by the chemical safety assessment is safe, whatever environmental compartment is considered. As a consequence, further studies to assess the fate of the substance in environmental compartments surface water/sediment, soil and groundwater are not necessary.
